Painted furniture lasts when the surface underneath is ready for it. Each piece is cleaned of oils and residue, then deglossed or sanded so the paint can grip a slick factory or varnished surface. Dents and gouges are filled and sanded flush. A bonding primer goes on next, which keeps stains and wood tannins from bleeding through and gives the topcoat an even base.
The finish is brushed or sprayed depending on the piece and the look you want. Sprayed finishes come out smooth and uniform, while a fine brushed finish suits traditional pieces. You can choose a solid color or a lightly distressed look with worn edges. Hardware is removed and either cleaned, painted or replaced, and the color is chosen to work with the walls, floors and fabrics in the room.

Can laminate or previously varnished furniture be painted?
Yes. Slick surfaces are deglossed or scuffed and then primed with a bonding primer so the paint adheres instead of peeling.
Is a sprayed or brushed finish better?
A sprayed finish gives the smoothest, most uniform surface. A brushed finish can suit traditional pieces, and either one is applied in thin, even coats.
Can you help choose a color that fits my room?
Yes. Colors are chosen against your walls, flooring and fabrics, and a sample can be tested on a hidden area of the piece before work starts.
